This is especially important for business owners and investors. The use of trusts, company structures or superannuation funds can drastically reduce tax payable.  To be clear, what I’m talking about here is legal tax reduction. In no way am I encouraging tax avoidance or any breach of tax laws.

Do your own research, look online, read articles and journals. Consult with a number of advisors; use Enterprise Search to get in touch with a local Accountant or tax specialist. Most importantly, don’t blindly follow the advice of others. Do your own research and take control of your situation.

Financial goals, such as saving and investing are challenged and undermined by savvy marketing. All day desirable consumables are thrown at us via online, tv, radio and print advertising.  The desire for a new car, holiday or fashion accessory will easily and push us off our investing/saving course.

If we become more aware of our thoughts and less automatic in our response to marketing stimulus we can catch our self out before we reach for the Amex. The concept I’m recommending is known as mindfulness, the basic idea is to raise awareness of your thoughts and understand how thoughts result in action (the purchase)

November 2010 is the month of Mindfulness at Enterprise Search, we are recommending staff, family and friends to become more mindful and less automatic in their daily lives.

For me, time at the gym recharges my batteries. Even though its hard work at the time, I leave feeling invigorated and ready to take on the world. Getting into exercise can be a challenge, I’d recommend finding a friend to work out with, someone who will motivate you when you’re feeling slack.

Holidays are also a great way to unwind; with a strong Aussie dollar an overseas getaway is even more affordable! There are great deals to be found online through booking websites like www.bestflights.com.au and www.expedia.com.au

It’s very important for business owners and managers to monitor communications sent by staff. Only last week I received a very unfriendly and somewhat rude email from an “admin assistant” from a company I was dealing with. The tone that was used + poor grammar and spelling made me cringe.

After reading over the email a few times, I wondered if the director of the firm had any idea such poor correspondence was going out.

It’s a quite Thursday afternoon and tiredness is kicking in. I have a number of important things I need to do. One of which is writing a blog

With a bit of self reflection it’s obvious I’m procrastinating and avoiding what needs to be done.

With most things, I find getting started the hardest part. So I Google “procrastination” and look for some interesting quotes and solutions.

The quote I like most is “The death of success comes from the delusion of: I’ll do it later” – thinking about that gave me a little drive.

The best solution I found (which I used today) was – Break it down into small steps and START.

The information above isn’t earth shattering but sometimes it’s the “small stuff’, the little things we overlook that can have the biggest impact.

I try to share my lessons and experiences with my colleagues at Enterprise Search. Try and do the same.

For a lot of people the work-life balance is a difficult issue. I’m very familiar with this problem as it was something I use to have a problem with.

Unrealistic goals, impatience, social pressures, competitive spirit, excessively optimistic outlooks can undermine the work-life balance.  The flow on from this can be serious, bad health, poor relationships, disconnection from society and diminished social interaction. All of which result in a negative physiological and ultimately psychological outcome.

In 2010 I would encourage everyone to take time to reflect on their work-life balance. Take some time out for yourself. Look after for your body and mind, ultimately it will return the favour.

At Enterprise Search we encourage our entire team to think about their work-life balance. At the end of the day; happy, healthy staff perform better.

How to make 2010 the most successful year yet

I’ve taken some time out over the Christmas/New Year break to reflect on ways to get the most out of 2010. Here is what I came up with:

1.       Professional development. Attend a conference, seminar or a trade show. Take time to network, learn a skill or develop a new business idea.

2.       Revenue growth. Develop a clear strategy to outperform last year’s earnings.  Consider selling a new product or service, value add what your already have.

3.       Review costs. Take time out to review your expenses, can you find any savings?

4.       Give something back. Consider supporting a charity in 2010. At Enterprise Search we vote on a charity to support each year.
